A light diffuser sits between a lamp and the room and does one of two jobs: it either scatters the light so the source stops being a visible glare point, or it cuts the angle at which light leaves the fitting so it does not shine into your eyes from across the room. Associated Plastics supplies both approaches, including egg crate louvre panels with an open square cell structure that controls glare while letting almost all the light through, and opal acrylic diffuser sheet that scatters light into a soft even glow. Both are cut to size in our Hobart workshop and shipped Australia-wide, which matters here because replacement diffusers almost never match a standard sheet size and cutting one down cleanly on site is difficult. Egg crate louvre is the standard replacement panel for recessed troffer fittings in offices, schools, workshops and retail spaces, and it is one of the cheapest ways to bring an ageing ceiling grid back to looking sharp. Egg Crate Louvre
Egg crate louvre or opal diffuser sheet
Egg crate louvre is an open grid of small square cells, typically around 10 to 15 mm across, that blocks light leaving the fitting at wide angles while passing nearly all of the light directed downwards. It gives the highest light output of any diffuser, keeps the source out of direct view at normal sightlines, and is the usual choice for offices and workspaces with screens. Opal diffuser sheet is a solid translucent panel that scatters light in all directions, hiding the individual lamps or LED points completely and producing a soft even glow. It loses more light than a louvre but gives a far gentler look, which is why it suits retail, hospitality and residential fittings and any run of LED strip where you do not want to see the individual diodes.
Measuring for a replacement panel
Take the panel out of the fitting where you can and measure the panel itself rather than the ceiling grid opening, since diffusers sit inside a rebate and are always slightly smaller than the nominal grid size. Measure length and width in millimetres at two points each in case the old panel has sagged or warped, and use the smaller figure. Common Australian troffer sizes are based on 1200 x 600 mm and 600 x 600 mm grids, but actual panel dimensions vary between fitting manufacturers, so always work off the panel in your hand. If the original is broken or missing, measure the internal rebate and subtract a couple of millimetres for clearance.
Handling and cleaning
Egg crate louvre is rigid but its cell walls are thin, so support the panel across its width when carrying it and avoid flexing it, which can crack the grid at the corners. Both louvre and opal panels clean with warm water and a mild detergent, never solvents or abrasive cleaners, which craze acrylic and leave a permanent haze. Dried-on dust is the main reason old panels look dim, and a wash often restores far more light output than people expect.
