Singlet, die cut or resealable: choosing the bag type
Singlet bags take their name from the vest-shaped handles cut into the top. They are the cheapest handled bag per unit, they load quickly at a counter, and they suit takeaway food, produce and general retail. Die cut carry bags have a punched handle in a reinforced top panel, sit flatter, and present better for boutique retail, gift and apparel. Resealable bags close with a press seal strip and are the choice wherever the contents need to be reopened or kept clean: spare parts, fasteners, samples, jewellery components and dry food. Plain clear PVC bags with no handle are display and presentation bags, used for garments, prints and product packing.
Gauge and size: matching the bag to the load
Bag thickness is quoted in microns, and it is the single biggest factor in whether a bag survives its job. As a rough guide, 20 to 30 micron suits light produce and dry goods, 35 to 50 micron is the general retail and takeaway range, and anything carrying weight, sharp corners or bark and soil needs 60 micron or heavier. Sizes are quoted as width x height in millimetres, with the gusset listed separately where the bag has one. Measure the widest point of your product and add roughly 20 mm to the width so the bag is not under tension when full. If you are packing something with corners, step up a gauge rather than a size.
