Overview

About ACP

Aluminium composite panel, almost always shortened to ACP and also widely known by trade names including Alucobond, Reynobond, Alpolic and Dibond, is a sandwich panel construction that has transformed signage and architectural cladding since its introduction in the 1960s. It was invented by the Swiss firm Alusuisse, which sold it under the Alucobond name from 1969 onwards. The product solved a problem that had been frustrating signwriters and architects for decades: how to produce a perfectly flat, lightweight panel that took premium paint finishes and could be cut and folded into three dimensional shapes.

The construction is simple. Two thin sheets of aluminium, typically 0.3 to 0.5 mm thick, are bonded to a plastic or mineral core to form a sandwich panel. The standard total thickness is 3 mm or 4 mm, with 6 mm panels available for heavier applications. The aluminium surfaces give the panel its appearance, weather resistance and structural skin. The core gives the panel its stiffness, weight saving and acoustic dampening. The result is a panel that is dimensionally stable, perfectly flat (no oil canning in large sizes), much lighter than solid aluminium for the same stiffness, and can be folded along V-grooved lines to make sign boxes, fascias and architectural details.

The core is the part of ACP that has attracted the most scrutiny in the last decade. Standard ACP uses a polyethylene (PE) core, which is light, cheap and gives excellent panel performance. After the 2014 Lacrosse tower fire in Melbourne and the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire in London, both of which involved PE cored ACP cladding contributing to rapid fire spread, the regulatory environment in Australia has tightened significantly. The National Construction Code (NCC) now requires fire retardant (FR) or non combustible (A2) cores on external facades of buildings above a certain height, and many state and council jurisdictions impose stricter requirements again. FR cored ACP has mineral filler added to the polyethylene to reduce flame spread. A2 cored ACP replaces most of the plastic core with mineral content, giving an effectively non combustible panel for the highest risk applications. For signage, shopfronts and interior cladding below the regulatory thresholds, standard PE cored ACP is still widely used. We can advise on the appropriate grade for any specific project.

The surface finish of ACP is what sells it for premium signage. The aluminium skins are factory coated, almost always with a PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) paint system that delivers exceptional colour retention in Australian UV. A good PVDF coating will hold its colour for 15 to 25 years outdoors with minimal fading. Standard finishes include high gloss, satin, brushed aluminium effect, mirror finish, and a wide range of solid colours. Wood grain, stone effect and timber look ACP panels are also available for architectural projects. White is the default for signage backgrounds and is stocked in quantity by most distributors.

Fabrication is mostly CNC based. The aluminium skins make ACP unsuitable for CO2 laser cutting, which is the main fabrication limitation. CNC routing is the standard method, both for cutting panels to shape and for cutting the V-grooves that allow ACP to be folded along clean straight lines into three dimensional shapes. After routing the V-groove, the panel can be folded by hand or in a press brake, and the corner can be glued, riveted or screwed to form a permanent right angle. This is how pan signs and sign boxes are made. ACP also drills cleanly with standard bits, rivets, screws and bonds with structural adhesives such as VHB tape and silicone.

Pricing places ACP at the premium end of the signage substrate market. It is significantly more expensive than foamed PVC and somewhat more expensive than solid aluminium sheet on a like for like basis, but considerably cheaper than custom painted steel or stone cladding for architectural use. Standard sheet sizes are 3050 x 1500 mm or 4050 x 1500 mm, with 6000 x 1500 mm available for large architectural runs. Most jobs are quoted on a per square metre basis with charges for routing, folding and assembly added separately.

Environmentally, ACP is broadly recyclable. The aluminium skins can be reclaimed and recycled into new aluminium products, and the polyethylene or mineral core can be processed separately. The aluminium content of ACP is itself usually high recycled content from the manufacturer. Service life is the key environmental argument: a properly specified PVDF coated ACP panel can sit on a building or a shopfront for 20 years or more with no maintenance and no replacement, which is a strong sustainability story compared to short life signage alternatives.

When not to use ACP: short campaign signage where foamed PVC will do the job at a quarter of the cost. Applications where laser cutting is the only available method. High impact applications, where solid steel or polycarbonate is more appropriate. And external facade applications above the relevant compliance thresholds, where only A2 or fire engineered solutions are appropriate. For everything else in the premium signage and architectural cladding space, ACP is generally the right answer.

Foamed PVC

ACP delivers a far superior finish and outdoor durability, with 15 to 25 year service life versus 2 to 5 years for foamed PVC. Foamed PVC is much cheaper and easier to cut. Use ACP for premium long life signage, foamed PVC for short to medium life jobs.

Solid aluminium

ACP is about half the weight of solid aluminium for the same stiffness and is much easier to fold and route. Solid aluminium is more robust and is the right choice when impact and security matter. ACP is the better choice for signage flatness and architectural detail.
