Ordering the wrong size is the most common and most expensive mistake people make with plastic. A panel that is 5 mm too wide won’t fit its frame, and a full sheet bought for a small job leaves you paying for material you’ll never use. Whether you’re glazing a shopfront, building a display case, framing artwork or feeding a laser cutter, knowing the standard acrylic sheet sizes in Australia before you order saves time, money and rework.
At Associated Plastics, a family-owned fabricator trading since 1979, we cut perspex and acrylic to size every day from our Hobart workshop and ship across the country. This guide shares what we’ve learned: the dimensions to expect, the thicknesses that suit each job, and when ordering acrylic cut to size beats buying a full sheet.
What are the standard acrylic sheet sizes in Australia?
The most common acrylic sheet sizes in Australia are 2440 x 1220 mm (8 x 4 ft) and 1830 x 1220 mm (6 x 4 ft). Thicknesses run from 2 mm to 25 mm. Larger cast formats such as 3050 x 2050 mm are usually supplied to order. If your project needs less than a full sheet, acrylic sheet cut to size means you pay only for the panel you need, not for the offcuts.
Sizes vary slightly between suppliers, so always confirm current stock before you design around a dimension.
Standard acrylic sheet sizes at a glance
| Sheet size (mm) | Imperial | Area | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2440 x 1220 | 8 x 4 ft | 2.98 m² | Glazing, shopfitting, large signs, partitions |
| 1830 x 1220 | 6 x 4 ft | 2.23 m² | Display cases, shelving runs, guards |
| 1220 x 1220 | 4 x 4 ft | 1.49 m² | Tabletops, sign faces, framing |
| 3050 x 2050 | 10 x 6.7 ft | 6.25 m² | Large-format glazing, special order |
The table above is a guide only. Every project is different, so get in touch with your details and we can discuss what yours will need.
A-series acrylic sizes (A4, A3, A2, A1)
For picture framing, signs, menus and documents, A-series acrylic sheets are the easiest way to order.
| Size | Dimensions (mm) |
|---|---|
| A4 | 210 x 297 |
| A3 | 297 x 420 |
| A2 | 420 x 594 |
| A1 | 594 x 841 |
| A0 | 841 x 1189 |
For framing, order 1 to 2 mm smaller than the frame rebate so the panel doesn’t bind when the temperature changes.
Acrylic sheet thickness: what to order
Thickness depends on unsupported span and the load or impact the panel could face. The ranges below are a starting point only. Specific projects have specific needs, so contact us and we can talk yours through.
- 2 to 3 mm acrylic: picture framing, sign faces, light covers and small displays.
- 4 to 6 mm acrylic: general purpose. Shelves, display cases, machine guards and small glazing.
- 8 to 12 mm acrylic: larger spans, sneeze guards, heavier glazing and furniture.
- 15 to 25 mm acrylic: machining, plinths, aquarium-style fabrication and structural parts.
Acrylic is stiff but brittle compared with polycarbonate. If a panel might take an impact, step up a thickness or shorten the span rather than relying on it to flex. For guards near moving parts or security glazing, consider polycarbonate instead.
How much does acrylic sheet weigh?
Acrylic weighs roughly 1.19 kg per square metre for every millimetre of thickness. That is about half the weight of glass, which makes installation far easier.
| Thickness | Weight per m² | Full 2440 x 1220 sheet |
|---|---|---|
| 3 mm | 3.6 kg | about 10.6 kg |
| 5 mm | 6.0 kg | about 17.7 kg |
| 6 mm | 7.1 kg | about 21.3 kg |
| 10 mm | 11.9 kg | about 35.4 kg |
A full 10 mm sheet is a two-person lift. If you only need a small panel, ordering perspex cut to size is also safer to handle and cheaper to freight.
Full sheet or cut to size?
Buy a full acrylic sheet when you are cutting many parts yourself, have the right tools and can store a large sheet flat.
Order acrylic cut to size when:
- you need a specific panel, shelf or cover
- you want polished edges, drilled holes or shaped profiles
- you don’t have a saw, laser or CNC router
- you want to avoid cracked edges and wasted material
A common mistake is buying a standard hardware-store size and finding it is a few millimetres too big or too small. With custom cut acrylic, you specify the exact millimetre dimensions and we cut on laser and CNC equipment in our Hobart workshop.
Allow for expansion
Acrylic expands and contracts with temperature far more than glass. As a rule of thumb, allow about 3 mm of clearance per metre of panel length, and drill fixing holes slightly oversize. A panel fixed with zero clearance in a hot Australian summer will bow or crack.
Common ordering mistakes
- Measuring the opening, not the panel. Subtract expansion clearance.
- Ignoring the protective film. Leave it on until installation is complete.
- Choosing too thin. A thin sheet over a wide span will bow.
- Forgetting edge finish. Saw-cut edges look cloudy. Request polished edges for visible panels.

Frequently asked questions
What is the standard size of an acrylic sheet in Australia?
The most common full sheet size is 2440 x 1220 mm (8 x 4 ft).
Can I buy acrylic sheet cut to size?
Yes. Associated Plastics cuts acrylic to your exact millimetre dimensions using laser and CNC equipment, with polished edges available.
How thick should acrylic be for a shelf?
For most shelves, 5 to 6 mm suits short spans, and 8 to 10 mm suits longer spans or heavier loads. The thickness you need depends on span and load. Contact us to discuss your requirements.
Is Perspex the same as acrylic?
Perspex is a brand name for acrylic (PMMA) sheet, much as Plexiglas is. In everyday use the terms are interchangeable.
What size acrylic do I need for an A4 or A3 picture frame?
A4 is 210 x 297 mm and A3 is 297 x 420 mm. Order 1 to 2 mm smaller than the frame rebate.
How much does a full sheet of acrylic weigh?
A 2440 x 1220 mm sheet weighs about 10.6 kg at 3 mm and about 35.4 kg at 10 mm.
