HDPE is the tough, chemically inert workhorse of the plastics world, and it is the material most Australian workshops reach for when a part has to survive knocks, chemicals and washdowns without cracking. Associated Plastics supplies high-density polyethylene sheets in thicknesses from 3 to 25 mm, in natural, white and black, along with HDPE strip and narrow rip-downs for wear pads, guides and chopping surfaces. Standard sheet is 2440 x 1220 mm and everything can be cut to your exact size on our CNC router, so you are not paying for a full sheet to make a handful of parts. Food-grade natural HDPE is the standard choice for cutting boards, food processing surfaces and tank liners, while UV-stabilised black and textured HDPE marine board suits boat fit-outs, dock fenders and outdoor furniture that stays wet. Choosing an HDPE thickness
For chopping boards and bench protection, 12 to 20 mm gives a board that stays flat and takes years of knife work. Machine guards and tank liners usually sit at 6 to 10 mm. Wear strips, chute liners and slide pads run from 3 to 6 mm where they are backed by steel, and thicker where they are unsupported. Above 25 mm you are generally better served by machining a part from HDPE block rather than laminating sheet. Bear in mind HDPE has a fair amount of thermal movement, so allow clearance in fixing holes on any panel over about a metre.
HDPE, marine board and polypropylene compared
Standard HDPE is smooth-faced, semi-rigid and slightly waxy, with excellent impact strength down to sub-zero temperatures and near-total resistance to acids, alkalis, salt water and most solvents. Marine board is the same base polymer with a textured, matte, fully UV-stabilised finish and a coloured through-body, which is why it is specified for boat and outdoor work where a smooth sheet would chalk and glare. Polypropylene is stiffer and handles higher service temperatures, which makes it the better pick for chemical tanks and anything near hot water, but it is more brittle in the cold. If the part will be knocked, dropped or lives outside in the wet, HDPE is usually the safer choice.
Cutting, machining and joining HDPE
HDPE routes and saws beautifully and is one of the easiest plastics to machine, but it cannot be laser cut cleanly and it cannot be glued. Its low surface energy defeats standard adhesives, so structural joins are made by plastic welding with HDPE rod, or mechanically with bolts and captive fasteners. We cut to size on the CNC router, drill and radius corners, and can weld fabricated HDPE tanks, liners and boxes in our Hobart workshop.
