High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) – Tough, Chemical-Resistant Plastic Sheet

High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is a rugged, versatile engineering plastic used across countless industries for its exceptional chemical resistance, moisture impermeability, and food-safe properties. Associated Plastics Tasmania supplies HDPE sheet in a comprehensive range of thicknesses and colours, with full custom fabrication capabilities.

What Is HDPE?

HDPE is a high-strength polyethylene plastic characterised by its high strength-to-density ratio. It is naturally translucent white but is available in a wide range of colours including black, blue, green, red, and yellow. HDPE is FDA-approved for food contact and is widely used in food processing, marine, agricultural, and industrial applications.

Properties and Benefits

Chemical Resistance

HDPE is highly resistant to a wide range of chemicals including acids, alkalis, solvents, and cleaning agents. This makes it ideal for chemical storage, laboratory work surfaces, and industrial environments where chemical exposure is routine.

Food Safe

HDPE is approved for direct food contact and is the material of choice for commercial chopping boards, food preparation surfaces, and food processing equipment. It does not absorb moisture, odours, or bacteria, maintaining hygiene standards in commercial kitchens.

Moisture Proof

With virtually zero water absorption, HDPE will not swell, warp, or degrade when exposed to water or moisture. This makes it perfect for marine applications, outdoor use, and any environment with high humidity or water exposure.

Impact Resistant

HDPE is exceptionally tough and impact resistant, even at low temperatures. It will not crack, chip, or shatter under heavy impact, making it suitable for wear strips, bump rails, and protective applications.

UV Stable

UV-stabilised HDPE grades resist degradation from sunlight exposure, maintaining their mechanical properties and colour stability in outdoor applications across Tasmania and Australia.

Easy to Machine

HDPE machines cleanly with standard woodworking and metalworking equipment. It can be CNC routed, sawn, drilled, milled, and turned with excellent results and clean edge finishes.

Available Thicknesses and Colours

We stock HDPE sheet in thicknesses from 3mm to 100mm, with standard colours including natural (white), black, blue, green, red, and yellow. Custom colours may be available on request for larger orders. Standard sheet sizes are 2440 x 1220mm and 3000 x 1500mm.

Common Applications

Commercial Chopping Boards

HDPE is the industry standard for commercial kitchen chopping boards. Colour-coded boards (white for dairy, red for meat, green for vegetables, blue for seafood, yellow for poultry) help maintain food safety compliance in commercial kitchens across Tasmania.

Marine Components

HDPE is widely used in marine environments for dock fenders, pile guards, boat components, fish processing tables, and aquaculture equipment. Its moisture resistance and durability in saltwater environments make it the material of choice for Tasmania’s marine and fishing industries.

Playground Equipment

Colourful HDPE panels are used for playground equipment, climbing walls, and outdoor play structures. The material is impact resistant, splinter-free, weather resistant, and available in bright, appealing colours.

Chemical Tanks and Containment

HDPE’s superior chemical resistance makes it ideal for fabricating chemical tanks, bund linings, drip trays, and secondary containment systems. It can be welded to create leak-proof vessels and structures.

Wear Strips and Guides

The low friction and abrasion resistance of HDPE make it suitable for conveyor guides, wear strips, slide plates, and other applications where materials slide against each other.

Agricultural Applications

HDPE is used throughout Tasmania’s agricultural sector for feed troughs, water tanks, chute linings, and general-purpose fabrication where chemical resistance and durability are essential.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is HDPE food safe?

Yes. HDPE is approved for direct food contact and is the standard material for commercial chopping boards and food preparation surfaces in Australia. It does not leach chemicals, absorb bacteria, or retain odours.

Can HDPE be welded?

Yes. HDPE can be welded using hot air welding and extrusion welding techniques to create strong, leak-proof joints. This makes it ideal for fabricating tanks, bunds, and containment structures. Our team has extensive experience with HDPE welding.

How does HDPE compare to polypropylene?

Both are excellent chemical-resistant plastics. HDPE is generally tougher and more impact resistant, especially at low temperatures. Polypropylene offers better fatigue resistance (ideal for living hinges) and higher temperature tolerance. Our team can advise which material best suits your application.

What thickness of HDPE do I need for chopping boards?

Commercial chopping boards are typically 12mm to 25mm thick. Thicker boards last longer and provide a more stable cutting surface. We can cut chopping boards to any size you require.
