What Is PVC Sheet?
Rigid PVC (also called PVC-U or uPVC – unplasticised PVC) is a stiff, strong thermoplastic sheet material. Unlike flexible PVC (which contains plasticisers), rigid PVC maintains its shape and structural integrity while offering excellent chemical and weather resistance.
Properties and Benefits
Chemical Resistance
Rigid PVC is resistant to most acids, alkalis, salts, and many organic solvents. It is widely used in chemical processing, water treatment, and laboratory environments where chemical exposure is routine.
Flame Retardant
PVC is inherently flame retardant with a limiting oxygen index (LOI) of approximately 45%, meaning it will not sustain combustion in normal atmospheric conditions. This natural flame resistance makes it suitable for electrical enclosures and building applications where fire performance matters.
Electrical Insulation
PVC is an excellent electrical insulator, making it the standard material for electrical conduit, switchboard backing, cable trunking, and electrical enclosures.
Weather Resistant

What is the difference between rigid PVC and foam PVC?
Rigid PVC (PVC-U) is a solid, dense sheet material used for structural and industrial applications. Foam PVC (Maxi-T) is a lightweight, expanded version used primarily for signage and displays. Rigid PVC is stronger and more chemical resistant; foam PVC is lighter and easier to work with for non-structural applications.
Can PVC be used for outdoor applications?
Yes. UV-stabilised rigid PVC grades perform well outdoors. Grey PVC in particular has excellent UV stability. White and coloured PVC grades should be UV-stabilised for extended outdoor exposure.
Is PVC sheet fire resistant?
PVC is inherently flame retardant and self-extinguishing. It will not sustain combustion in normal air, making it one of the safest plastics from a fire perspective. It is widely used in electrical and building applications for this reason.
