Corflute

Corflute is a hollow core corrugated plastic sheet built from two outer walls separated by vertical ribs, much like corrugated cardboard but in polypropylene. That structure is what makes corflute sheets so useful. You get a rigid, flat panel at a fraction of the weight and cost of solid plastic, and unlike cardboard it shrugs off rain, sunlight and most chemicals.

Working with the flute direction

The flutes run the length of the sheet, and the panel is considerably stiffer along the flute than across it. For a sign that has to stand up to wind, run the flutes vertically so the panel resists bending. If you are folding corflute into a box or a header, score along the flute for a clean hinge. This is worth thinking about before you cut, because it is the single biggest factor in how rigid the finished job feels.

Sizes and colours

• Colour: corflute white or black
• Sheet size: 1200mm x 2400mm (2400 x 1200 standard sheet)
• Sheet thickness: 3mm or 5mm

The 3mm sheet suits most flat signage and light packaging. The 5mm sheet is the better option for larger format signs, free standing boards and anything that will be handled repeatedly or reused across multiple jobs.

3mm or 5mm, which do you need

If the panel is under about 900mm on its longest side and will be fixed flat to a wall or frame, 3mm is usually plenty and it is the cheaper option. Once you go past that, or if the sign is free standing on stakes, step up to 5mm. Corflute white is the standard choice because it gives printing and vinyl a clean base, while black is often preferred for display work and backing panels.
