Clarifoil

Clarifoil cellulose acetate film for window patching, laminating and packaging. Clear, biodegradable, anti-static film delivered Australia-wide.

Clarifoil is a cellulose acetate film made from wood pulp, and it fills a niche no other clear film quite matches. It is glass clear with very low haze, naturally anti-static so it does not cling and attract dust the way polypropylene and PVC films do, it takes print and adhesive readily, and it is biodegradable, which is increasingly the reason customers ask for it by name. Its most common use in Australia is window patching: the clear panel in a cardboard carton or presentation box that lets the buyer see the product. It is also used as a laminating and overwrap film, in display and mounting work, and anywhere an acetate film with a genuine environmental story is needed rather than a plastic one. Associated Plastics supplies Clarifoil from stock in our Hobart warehouse and ships Australia-wide. The sections below cover where acetate film outperforms the alternatives and what to know before running it through your equipment.

Where acetate film beats the alternatives

Against PVC film, acetate is clearer, does not contain plasticisers that can migrate into the product, and does not yellow with age in the same way. Against polypropylene, it is far less static-prone, which is the practical difference on a packing line: acetate sheets separate cleanly and stay dust free, while polypropylene clings to itself and to everything else. Acetate also accepts a much wider range of inks and adhesives without surface treatment. Its trade-offs are that it is more moisture sensitive than the plastic films and less tear resistant, so it is not the material for a heavy duty wrap or an outdoor application.

Window patching and packaging use

For carton windows, acetate is glued into the die-cut aperture from the inside so the film sits flat and the cardboard edge frames it cleanly. Because acetate is anti-static, the finished window stays clear on the shelf rather than fogging with attracted dust, which is the usual complaint with cheaper films. Allow a reasonable overlap onto the board around the whole aperture for a reliable glue bond, and check adhesive compatibility on a sample before running a full job, since acetate behaves differently from polypropylene with some hot melts.

Storing and handling Clarifoil

Acetate absorbs and releases moisture with the surrounding air, and that dimensional movement is the main thing to design around. Store it flat and sealed in a stable indoor environment rather than a hot shed or a damp store, and let it acclimatise to the workshop before running a precision job. Handle sheets by the edges, since the surface takes fingerprints readily, and keep the interleaving in place until the film goes into the machine.
