Aluminium Composite Panel (ACP) – Premium Architectural Cladding and Signage Material

Aluminium Composite Panel (ACP) is a high-performance building and signage material consisting of two thin aluminium skins bonded to a polyethylene or mineral-filled core. Associated Plastics Tasmania supplies ACP in a range of finishes and thicknesses with CNC routing and fabrication services for architectural and signage applications.

What Is Aluminium Composite Panel?

ACP (also known as ACM – Aluminium Composite Material) is a sandwich panel comprising two 0.5mm aluminium sheets bonded to a 2-5mm polyethylene (PE) or fire-rated mineral core. This structure creates a panel that is remarkably rigid and flat while remaining lightweight and easy to fabricate.

ACP has become one of the most widely used facade and signage materials in modern architecture and commercial signage throughout Australia.

Properties and Benefits

Exceptional Flatness and Rigidity

ACP panels are extremely flat – far flatter than solid aluminium sheet of comparable thickness. This makes them ideal for large sign faces and building facades where a perfectly smooth, premium appearance is essential.

Lightweight

Despite its rigid, solid feel, ACP is significantly lighter than solid aluminium, reducing structural load requirements and making handling and installation easier and more cost-effective.

Weather Resistant

The aluminium skins provide excellent corrosion resistance and weather protection, making ACP suitable for permanent outdoor applications. Coated finishes (PVDF, polyester) provide additional UV and colour stability.

Fire Rated Options

For applications requiring fire performance, mineral-filled core (FR) ACP panels are available that meet Australian building code requirements for combustibility and fire spread. Always specify FR-grade ACP for building facades and interior cladding in accordance with the National Construction Code.

Easy to Fabricate

ACP can be CNC routed, v-grooved and folded, drilled, and mechanically fastened. V-groove routing allows panels to be folded into precise angles for cassette panels, sign boxes, and architectural trim without visible joints.

Available Finishes

  • Solid Colours – a wide range of standard and custom colours with polyester or PVDF coating
  • Metallic – brushed aluminium, silver, gold, copper, and other metallic effects
  • Wood Grain – realistic timber-look finishes for architectural applications
  • Stone and Marble – natural stone-look finishes for premium facades
  • Mirror – highly reflective mirror finishes for feature panels

Common Applications

Building Facades and Cladding

ACP is widely used for external building cladding across Tasmania and Australia. Its flat surface, wide colour range, and easy installation make it the preferred choice for modern commercial and residential facades.

Signage

Large format signage, shopfront signs, pylon signs, and illuminated sign boxes commonly use ACP as the face material. Its rigidity eliminates the waviness seen in thinner materials, producing a clean, professional result.

Shopfronts and Retail

ACP is used for shopfront cladding, fascia panels, column covers, and interior feature walls. The range of finishes available allows designers to achieve virtually any look from industrial to luxury.

Internal Cladding and Splashbacks

Inside buildings, ACP is used for wall cladding, column covers, ceiling panels, and kitchen splashbacks. FR-grade panels meet fire requirements for interior applications.

Canopies and Soffits

ACP panels are commonly used for canopy fascias, soffit linings, and awning covers, providing a clean, modern finish that is easy to maintain.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between PE core and FR core ACP?

PE (polyethylene) core ACP is the standard grade, suitable for signage and applications not subject to fire regulations. FR (fire-retardant) core ACP contains mineral filler that meets combustibility requirements under the National Construction Code. For building facades and interior cladding, FR-grade should always be specified.

Can ACP be bent or curved?

ACP can be v-grooved on the back face and folded to precise angles for cassette panels, trays, and sign boxes. For curved applications, panels can be rolled or brake-formed to specific radii. Our CNC equipment can produce v-grooves to exact specifications.

How long does ACP last outdoors?

Quality ACP with PVDF coating is rated for 20+ years of outdoor exposure without significant colour fade or degradation. Polyester-coated panels typically have a 10-15 year colour warranty. Both outlast most painted surfaces.

What thickness ACP should I use?

Standard ACP is 3mm (for signage) or 4mm (for building cladding). The 4mm panel provides greater rigidity and is the standard for architectural applications. For large unsupported spans, thicker panels or additional support framing may be required.
